Neighborhood history>> Church of Our Lady of Boa Viagem, which gave the neighborhood its name. In the 17th century, a church dedicated to Our Lady of Boa Viagem was built out of the devotion of the fishermen who lived in the then small settlement. On June 26, 1743, Captain-Major João de Teyve Barreto de Menezes, former governor of Ceará Grande, granted three leagues of land to Antônio Domingos Alvarez, located on the banks of the Cavalo Morto stream, which flows into the famous Quixeramobim River. Most of Boa Viagem Beach is protected by a barrier of natural reefs, which gave the city its name. In the 17th century, the settlement of Boa Viagem served as a resting point for travelers passing through from the south of the Captaincy of Pernambuco. It became truly residential in the late 1970s, together with the construction of Shopping Recife.
