History
Poço da Panela emerged around the 18th century, as part of the lands of Engenho Casa Forte, owned by Diogo Gonçalves. The sugar mill was built on lands donated by Duarte Coelho. At first, it was a simple village amid vast sugarcane plantations. At that time, a major cholera epidemic swept through Recife, and some doctors reported that baths during the summer in the stretch of the Capibaribe River that bordered the village were a miraculous remedy in the fight against the disease. The news spread very quickly and caused this area to begin attracting Recife's wealthy residents, who soon built summer mansions there. The village grew and, in 1772, received a church dedicated to Our Lady of Health. It remained a predominantly rural neighborhood until the early 1970s, when it was divided into lots that were occupied by the middle class.
It was one of the neighborhoods most affected by the flood of the Capibaribe River in 1975.
Poço da Panela is subject to restrictions on high-rise construction, as it is a heritage-protected area by the Recife City Hall, designated as a Special Zone for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage (ZEPH), like 32 other areas in the city.
The backyards are filled with fruit trees, such as mango trees, sapodilla trees, oiti trees, cashew trees, jackfruit trees, among many others. Even its Carnival is nostalgic, since the lyrical parade Pára-quedista Real starts there, drawing admirers to the sound of traditional frevos-de-bloco. But there is also room for modern rhythms with the Guaiamum Treloso and De Bar em Bar blocos. It has two private schools: Centro Escolar Carochinha and Colégio Ethos.
Some new streets have been paved, surfaced, or upgraded with the aim of improving residents' quality of life and easing traffic on Avenida 17 de Agosto, which receives an increasing number of vehicles.[14] There is almost no commerce or bus service there. Estrada Real do Poço is the neighborhood's main thoroughfare, as well as the Church of Our Lady of Health (both heritage-listed). The neighborhood is home to the Poço da Panela Community Library, created in 2011 and registered with 120 children. Coordinated by journalist Samarone Lima, the library relies on donations and has a high demand for children's and young adult books. It also houses the IBAMA triage center, located in a chalet on Avenida 17 de Agosto.[16] It preserves a baobab tree, native to Madagascar and rare in Brazil; these trees are mainly concentrated in the state of Pernambuco, where 16 specimens have been cataloged.
The neighborhood's public spaces are in a state of neglect. Praça de Nossa Senhora da Saúde is now used only by informal car washers and street vendors. One of the worst reflections of this reality is the lack of respect for the image of abolitionist José Mariano. The neighborhood had been experiencing an increase in robberies. In Poço da Panela, the number of cases grew by 66%, from three to five incidents.
>> 4 TIPS TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE IDEAL PROPERTY TO BUY:
Do not think only about your current marital status. Real estate is durable, so the choice must be made not only for today, but also with your life plans in mind. You can find houses and apartments of different sizes, and this will also influence the number of bedrooms the property has. If you plan to live alone, consider whether the home you are about to acquire will meet your needs at least in the medium term. A one-bedroom apartment for a single person, for example, can accommodate a future spouse and even a child in a crib. But if starting a family is closer to your reality, it may be ideal to look at 2- or even 3-bedroom properties. In this way, you secure a home that will accommodate your life projects.
> Location is a relevant factor. Check whether the properties you are considering are well located. This does not necessarily mean being in a central area, but rather having good infrastructure around it to meet everyday and unforeseen needs. Get to know the neighborhood: check whether there are pharmacies, bakeries, supermarkets, health centers, schools, as well as good public transportation coverage. This will be necessary and, in the end, may save you a great deal of effort.
> Assess whether the "amenities" meet your needs Number of bathrooms, parking spaces, elevator, accessibility, built-in closets... Each has its usefulness depending on your needs and therefore must be taken into consideration. For those who own cars or motorcycles, not having a parking space can create a high monthly cost that, in the end, will be much more expensive than making a slightly larger investment for these features, for example. The same applies if an apartment does not have a laundry area large enough for a washing machine. In the rush of everyday life, it is not always possible to wash clothes by hand, and the lack of space for a washer can lead to recurring laundry expenses that would make the home unaffordable. Therefore, pay attention to your needs, calculate everything carefully, and make a choice that is better aligned and viable.
> Check whether your dream matches your financial reality: you may dream of having a larger apartment, with a laundry area, spacious bedrooms, and everything else. However, before you start looking, be realistic: assess your financial possibilities. Even with a good down payment with FGTS support, financing can end up being expensive due to interest rates, and no one knows what tomorrow will bring. So do not aim higher than you can afford. Evaluate the available budget, run simulations if financing is involved, and only then go in search of the property. In this way, you will be able to align your dream with your reality, avoiding committing to something you will not be able to fulfill. By paying attention to these tips, you will certainly make a more advantageous deal. So be sure to evaluate these items!
